ποΈ About Gangotri
Gangotri, situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is the origin of the holy River Ganga. The Gangotri temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, marks the spiritual source of the river.
The actual source is Gaumukh, a glacier located about 19 km further. The town and temple offer a tranquil and divine atmosphere surrounded by the Himalayas and the Bhagirathi River.
π Mythology & History
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga descended to Earth to purify the souls of King Bhagirath's ancestors. Lord Shiva caught her in his matted hair to soften her descent and released her at Gangotri.
The temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century and is a fine example of Himalayan architecture. It remains a key stop in the Char Dham Yatra.
