ποΈ About Yamunotri
Yamunotri, located at an altitude of 3,293 meters in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is the origin of the sacred River Yamuna. It is one of the revered Char Dham pilgrimage sites.
The Yamunotri temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, stands surrounded by towering peaks and lush green forests. The actual source, Yamunotri Glacier, is situated about 1 km further uphill from the temple.
π Mythology & History
According to legend, Yamunotri is the home of Goddess Yamuna, the daughter of the Sun God Surya and sister of Yama, the God of Death. Bathing in the river is believed to purify sins and protect from untimely death.
The current temple was constructed in the 19th century by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur after the original temple was destroyed by natural calamities. It is a significant spiritual center in Hinduism.

- By Road: Accessible by road till Janki Chatti. A 6 km trek leads to Yamunotri temple.
- By Rail: Nearest station: Dehradun (approx. 172 km) and Rishikesh (approx. 200 km).
- By Air: Nearest airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun.
The trek to Yamunotri from Janki Chatti is scenic and lined with waterfalls and majestic Himalayan views.

Best Months: May to June and September to October. The weather is ideal and safe for trekking.
Avoid: Monsoon season (JulyβAugust) due to heavy rainfall and landslides. The temple is closed during winter (NovβApr).
Opening & Closing: Opens on Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Diwali. Confirm exact dates each year.
