Yamunotri, located at an altitude of 3,293 meters in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is the origin of the sacred River Yamuna. It is one of the revered Char Dham pilgrimage sites.

The Yamunotri temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, stands surrounded by towering peaks and lush green forests. The actual source, Yamunotri Glacier, is situated about 1 km further uphill from the temple.

According to legend, Yamunotri is the home of Goddess Yamuna, the daughter of the Sun God Surya and sister of Yama, the God of Death. Bathing in the river is believed to purify sins and protect from untimely death.

The current temple was constructed in the 19th century by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur after the original temple was destroyed by natural calamities. It is a significant spiritual center in Hinduism.
