Kedarnath Weather Guide - Month Wise Climate Details

Know what to expect each month at Kedarnath to plan your pilgrimage efficiently. Weather plays a crucial role in your yatra experience, and this guide helps you prepare accordingly.

Kedarnath remains completely closed to tourists in January due to extreme cold and heavy snowfall. The area is covered under several feet of snow, and the temple is shifted to Ukhimath for worship. Temperatures range from -15°C to -5°C. Trekking is impossible, and all roads are blocked. Avoid planning any visit during this month.

The Kedarnath Temple usually reopens in early May. The weather turns pleasant with daytime temperatures between 8°C to 15°C. Snow starts melting, and treks become accessible. This is a good time to visit with moderate footfall. Nights are still chilly, so warm clothes are recommended. Make bookings early due to high pilgrimage demand.

July brings monsoon rains, making the trek slippery and risky. Landslides are common in this month, so travel should be avoided if possible. Temperatures range from 5°C to 12°C. Visibility is low and weather unpredictable. Not an ideal time for yatra unless emergency. Always check Uttarakhand weather alerts before traveling.

September is one of the best months to visit Kedarnath. Monsoon clears the air and mountains appear greener and fresher. Daytime temperatures range between 10°C to 18°C. Trekking becomes safer again and crowd levels remain moderate. Still carry rain gear just in case of leftover showers.

Kedarnath Temple closes by mid-November, depending on the calendar. Temperatures drop sharply, ranging from -5°C to 5°C. The air is crisp but cold, and snowfall begins at higher altitudes. It’s the last chance for darshan before winter sets in. After closing, the idol is shifted to Ukhimath.
