Gangotri Opening and Closing Dates

Gangotri Temple Opening & Closing Dates

Plan your pilgrimage with ease by knowing the important temple timings, seasonal details, and expert tips from Shree Ram Tourism's.

Gangotri Temple opens every year on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, usually in late April or early May. The opening ceremony is marked by Vedic chants, rituals, and a grand procession of the idol from Mukhba village to the temple.

The temple closes on the day of Diwali, which usually falls in late October or early November. After the closing ceremony, the idol of Goddess Ganga is taken to Mukhba village for winter worship, and the temple remains inaccessible due to snow.

During the winter months, when Gangotri becomes snowbound, the idol of Goddess Ganga is worshipped at her winter seat in Mukhba village. Devotees can visit Mukhba to continue their worship even when the temple in Gangotri is closed.

The best time to visit Gangotri is from May to June and September to October. These months offer pleasant weather, open roads, and vibrant spiritual energy. Avoid visiting during monsoon (July–August) due to landslides and roadblocks.

Plan your journey early in the season to avoid monsoon disruptions. Carry warm clothing even in summer. Book accommodations in advance. Keep ID proof and medical supplies handy. Travel with experienced guides like Shree Ram Tourism’s team for a safe and enriching Yatra.
