Gangotri Temple

Gangotri Temple Details

Gain insights into the holy Gangotri Temple—its origin, religious rituals, and the spiritual experiences it offers to pilgrims visiting from across the globe.

Gangotri Temple was built in the early 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha general. According to legend, this is the place where King Bhagirath performed penance to bring the River Ganga to earth to purify the souls of his ancestors. The temple holds immense historical and spiritual significance in Hindu mythology.

The temple is made of white granite and follows classic Himalayan architecture. With a height of around 20 feet, it has a sloping roof and wooden beams, and is set amidst snow-covered peaks and pine trees. The temple exudes simplicity and strength, standing resilient in the high-altitude terrain.

The temple opens at 6:15 AM with the Abhishek and Ganga Aarti. Throughout the day, various rituals including bhog and special offerings take place. Evening Aarti starts around 7:00 PM. The poojas are performed by the temple priests with great devotion and traditional Vedic chants, enhancing the spiritual aura.

Gangotri is one of the Char Dhams and holds high spiritual importance. It is believed that a dip in the river here cleanses one of sins and brings moksha (liberation). Devotees believe that Ganga Mata descended on Earth here to bless humanity and offer salvation, making it one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India.

Devotees can book special poojas and aartis either on-site or through registered tour operators. During the peak yatra season, it’s advisable to pre-book through trusted sources like Shree Ram Tourism’s or the official Char Dham portal. Services include personalized pooja offerings, Ganga jal collection, and spiritual guidance.

Several sacred places surround Gangotri Temple. These include Surya Kund, Gauri Kund, Pandava Gufa, and Bhagirath Shila. Gomukh—the source of the River Ganga—is also a 18 km trek from Gangotri and is considered one of the most spiritually significant destinations for Hindu pilgrims and trekkers alike.
