Understanding the weather is crucial for a safe and fulfilling Gangotri Yatra. Here’s a detailed month-wise breakdown of Gangotri's climate to help you plan better.
Gangotri remains completely snowbound and inaccessible in January. Temperatures can drop below -10°C, and heavy snowfall blocks routes. The temple is closed during this period.
Snowfall continues in February with extremely cold weather. Pilgrimage is not possible, and the area remains closed to tourists due to safety concerns and harsh climate.
Snow begins to melt in lower altitudes but Gangotri is still covered in snow. Access remains limited. Preparation for the temple opening starts late March, weather permitting.
April marks the gradual re-opening of routes. The temperature begins to rise slightly (2°C to 10°C). Pilgrims can start visiting by the end of the month when roads are cleared.
The official pilgrimage season begins. May is pleasant with temperatures between 5°C and 15°C. This is the best time to visit Gangotri and witness the opening of the temple.
June remains favorable with mild temperatures and clear skies. Pilgrimage activity peaks. Expect occasional pre-monsoon showers. Trekking is also ideal in this month.
The monsoon season begins with heavy rainfall and landslides. Road travel can be risky. It’s not advisable to travel during July due to increased chances of disruptions.
August sees continued rainfall. Pilgrims are advised to avoid traveling due to slippery roads and landslides. Weather can be unpredictable and challenging for visitors.
The monsoon recedes and travel resumes. September is a great month for darshan and trekking, with temperatures around 10°C to 18°C and clearer skies.
One of the best times to visit Gangotri. Cool temperatures and festive ambiance prevail. The temple prepares to close by the end of the month before winter sets in.
The temple closes for winter. Weather turns cold and snowfall begins. Gangotri becomes inaccessible soon after, and the idol is moved to Mukhba village for winter worship.
December sees freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall. Gangotri remains closed. Pilgrims and travelers should avoid the area during this period for safety reasons.
