Festivals Celebrated in Kedarnath

Kedarnath is not only a spiritual destination but also a place that celebrates vibrant and traditional festivals. These occasions bring devotees together in devotion and cultural harmony. Here are the main festivals celebrated in Kedarnath:

The grand opening ceremony of the Kedarnath Temple marks the beginning of the Char Dham Yatra. It usually takes place in May, with the idol of Lord Shiva brought back from Ukhimath. The temple is beautifully decorated, and priests perform elaborate rituals in the presence of thousands of devotees and the Gaddi people.

Maha Shivratri is one of the most important festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva. Though the Kedarnath Temple remains closed, celebrations are held at Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, where Lord Kedarnath's idol is worshipped during the winter. Devotees fast, chant mantras, and perform night-long prayers and abhishekams.

Held in both Kedarnath and Badrinath, this cultural festival includes performances by local artists, devotional singing, classical dance, and traditional music. It celebrates the spiritual connection between the twin shrines and offers an insight into Garhwali culture. Tourists and pilgrims enjoy the festivities in the lap of the Himalayas.

Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm at Kedarnath just before the temple closes for winter. The entire shrine is lit up with lamps and decorative lights. Special aartis and prayers are conducted. The temple is decked in flowers and the evening is a spiritually uplifting experience for all devotees present.

The closing ceremony takes place in November on Bhai Dooj or after Diwali. The idol of Lord Shiva is taken back to Ukhimath with processions and rituals. Devotees gather to seek blessings before winter closure. It is a poignant and emotional farewell until the next Yatra season.
