Festivals Celebrated at Yamunotri
Yamunotri is not only a spiritual destination but also a cultural haven. The festivals celebrated here reflect deep devotion and cultural richness. Here are the major festivals of Yamunotri:
This grand event marks the official start of the Char Dham Yatra. Held on Akshaya Tritiya (April/May), devotees gather in large numbers as the Yamunotri Temple opens its doors after winter. The idol of Goddess Yamuna is brought from Kharsali village to the temple with music and celebration.
Celebrated in April or May, this day marks the birth of Goddess Yamuna. Special pujas are performed in the temple. Pilgrims take holy dips in the Yamuna River and offer prayers. The temple is beautifully decorated and a festive vibe fills the valley.
Celebrated in October/November, Bhai Dooj coincides with the closing of the Yamunotri Temple. Sisters pray for their brothers' long life by performing rituals. The ceremony is emotional as it marks the end of pilgrim visits until next spring.
Though the temple closes around this time, locals in the nearby villages celebrate Diwali with traditional lamps, sweets, and cultural programs. The temple area is lit up symbolically, creating a serene and spiritual environment.
Each full moon brings special significance in Hindu tradition. On these days, special rituals are held at Yamunotri. Pilgrims gather for night aarti and the moonlit Himalayas add to the divine experience.
After the temple closes, the idol of Goddess Yamuna is taken to Kharsali village. During winter, daily worship continues there with local devotees. Kharsali becomes the spiritual center for Yamuna worship until the temple reopens in summer.
