The Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand. Located at an altitude of 3,293 meters, it marks the source of the Yamuna River. The temple was originally built in the 19th century and attracts thousands of devotees each year.
Yamunotri is accessible via a scenic trek of 6 km from Janki Chatti. The nearest major town is Barkot, which is well-connected by road to Dehradun and Haridwar. Helicopter services are not available at Yamunotri, so pilgrims usually travel by road and complete the trek on foot or by pony.
The ideal time to visit Yamunotri is from May to June and September to October. The weather is pleasant during these months. Monsoon season (July–August) should be avoided due to heavy rainfall and potential landslides.
Nearby attractions include Surya Kund – a thermal spring used to cook rice as a prasad offering, Divya Shila – a sacred rock pillar worshipped before entering the temple, and Hanuman Chatti – a tranquil spot at the confluence of rivers Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna.
Carry proper trekking gear and warm clothes even in summer. Begin your trek early in the day and stay hydrated. Elderly travelers are advised to hire a pony or palki. Avoid plastic, respect the sacred environment, and travel in groups for safety.
